Retatrutide approval status at a glance
Retatrutide is not an approved medicine in the United States or anywhere else. Lilly said so directly on August 12, 2026, and nothing published since has changed that. (Eli Lilly, Aug 12, 2026) The next regulatory step is a U.S. filing that Lilly says it will make in the first quarter of 2027. (Eli Lilly, Sep 29, 2026) For the full drug profile, see the retatrutide hub.

A Biologics License Application (BLA) is the formal request a company sends FDA to market a biologic product. Lilly’s July 23, 2026 release said the U.S. submission would follow completion of the chemistry, manufacturing and controls (CMC) package. (Eli Lilly, Jul 23, 2026)
Retatrutide timeline: from first paper to planned filing
Every row below is a dated, primary event. Efficacy numbers in this table use the estimand each source led with: Lilly releases report the efficacy estimand (the result if every participant had stayed on treatment), while the journals lead with the treatment-regimen estimand (all randomized participants, regardless of whether they kept taking the drug).

FDA warning letters about retatrutide
FDA has not reviewed retatrutide for approval, but it has written to sellers who offered it online. The four letters below were read directly on fda.gov. Each treats retatrutide sold outside a trial as an unapproved drug.
| Date | What FDA said | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Dec 10, 2024 | “Retatrutide” was an unapproved new drug despite “research purposes only” labeling | FDA CDER |
| Sep 9, 2025 | Compounded retatrutide does not qualify for the 503A or 503B compounding exemptions | FDA |
| Mar 31, 2026 | Retatrutide sold as “GLP-1-R peptide” was an unapproved new drug | FDA |
| Aug 24, 2026 | “GLP-3R” (retatrutide) was an unapproved new drug | FDA |
Two points stand out. First, a “research use only” or “not for human consumption” label did not change FDA’s view of the product. Second, compounding pharmacies cannot legally fill the gap: the 2025 letter says retatrutide is not eligible for the exemptions that let pharmacies compound some drugs. We are aware of reports of other letters but list only those we read in full.
On August 12, 2026, Lilly said it had filed six new lawsuits against U.S. sellers and had reported more than 14,000 websites, advertisements, social media posts and product listings in over 100 countries. (Eli Lilly, Aug 12, 2026) Whatever is sold under the name, it has not been through the FDA review that an approved product must pass.
What “GLP-3” means, and what it does not
“GLP-3” is a community nickname for retatrutide. It is not an official or scientific name, and there is no hormone called GLP-3. Semaglutide acts on one of retatrutide’s three targets (GLP-1) and tirzepatide on two (GIP and GLP-1).
Lilly calls retatrutide a “triple agonist”. It is a single peptide that activates three hormone receptors: GIP, GLP-1 and glucagon. (Cell Metabolism, Aug 18, 2022) Its development code is LY3437943. The street versions of the name show up in FDA’s own letters, which quote sellers using “GLP-3R” and “GLP-1-R peptide”. (FDA, Aug 24, 2026)
Products marketed with similar-sounding names, such as capsules or supplements advertised with “GLP-3” in the name, are not Lilly products. Lilly has stated that no retatrutide medicine is approved anywhere and that retatrutide cannot be legally sold or marketed for human use, so no consumer product under any name is an approved form of it. (Eli Lilly, Sep 29, 2026) For a plain-language comparison of the receptor targets, see GLP-3 vs GLP-1.
Registry status of the TRIUMPH trials
ClinicalTrials.gov is the public U.S. registry where sponsors list trials. We retrieved each record on October 19, 2026.
| Trial | Registry number | Population | Status | Primary completion |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| TRIUMPH-1 | NCT05929066 | Obesity or overweight, no diabetes | Completed | Apr 6, 2026 |
| TRIUMPH-2 | NCT05929079 | Obesity or overweight with type 2 diabetes | Completed | Jun 16, 2026 |
| TRIUMPH-3 | NCT05882045 | BMI 35 or more with cardiovascular disease | Completed | Apr 16, 2026 |
| TRIUMPH-4 | NCT05931367 | Obesity or overweight with knee osteoarthritis | Completed | Nov 14, 2025 |
| TRANSCEND-T2D-1 | NCT06354660 | Type 2 diabetes on diet and exercise | Completed | Jan 22, 2026 |
| TRIUMPH-5 | NCT06662383 | Obesity; retatrutide vs tirzepatide | Active, not recruiting | Nov 2026 (estimated) |
None of the five completed records had posted results on the registry when we checked. Two small discrepancies are worth knowing. The registry lists 2,335 enrolled in TRIUMPH-1 and 1,946 in TRIUMPH-3, while Lilly reports 2,339 and 1,949 randomized. And Lilly’s December 11, 2025 release printed NCT05869903 as TRIUMPH-4’s number; the registry lists that number as ATTAIN-1, an orforglipron trial, and lists TRIUMPH-4 as NCT05931367. (ClinicalTrials.gov, Aug 14, 2026)
What approval would still require
Approval is not automatic after positive trials. Based on Lilly’s statements and FDA’s published process, these steps remain:
- Submission. Lilly files the BLA, planned for Q1 2027, after finishing the manufacturing (CMC) package. (Eli Lilly, Jul 23, 2026)
- FDA review. FDA’s stated goal is to act within 10 months under standard review, or 6 months if it grants priority review. (FDA, Jan 4, 2018) Lilly’s releases do not say which pathway it expects.
- A decision. FDA can approve, ask for more information, or decline. An approval would come with a prescribing label that sets the approved doses, warnings and uses.
We do not give a predicted approval or launch date, because no source we trust states one. The TRIUMPH-3 trial was also not designed to settle cardiovascular safety: its three-point MACE result had a hazard ratio of 1.12 (95% CI 0.64 to 1.96) on few events. (Eli Lilly, Jul 23, 2026)
How to use this site while retatrutide is investigational
Our retatrutide tools describe how the trials were run. They are not dosing guidance. The retatrutide plotter models the relative amount of drug over time for a published trial schedule, and the titration tool lays out the Phase 3 step-up: participants started at 2 mg once weekly and stepped up every 4 weeks to 4, 9 or 12 mg. (Eli Lilly, Dec 11, 2025) Side-effect rates by arm are in the side effects guide.
Frequently asked questions
Is retatrutide FDA approved?
- No. As of October 19, 2026, retatrutide has not been approved by the FDA. Lilly said on August 12, 2026 that no medicine containing retatrutide had been approved for human use by any regulator in the world, and its September 29, 2026 release says it plans to submit a Biologics License Application in Q1 2027. Until FDA reviews and approves that application, retatrutide is an investigational drug.
When will GLP-3 be available?
- No one can give a date yet. Lilly plans to submit its U.S. application in Q1 2027. FDA's stated goal is to act within 10 months under standard review or 6 months under priority review, and the review can end in an approval, a request for more data or a rejection. Launch timing after any approval is also not public.
What is GLP-3 retatrutide?
- "GLP-3" is an informal nickname used online for retatrutide (LY3437943), Eli Lilly's investigational once-weekly drug. It is not an official name. Lilly calls retatrutide a triple agonist because it acts on three hormone receptors: GIP, GLP-1 and glucagon. There is no hormone called GLP-3.
Is it legal to sell retatrutide as a research chemical?
- FDA warning letters dated December 10, 2024, March 31, 2026 and August 24, 2026 say retatrutide sold online is an unapproved new drug, even when it is labeled for research purposes only. Lilly said on September 29, 2026 that retatrutide cannot be legally sold or marketed for human use.
Are GLP-3 capsules the same as retatrutide?
- No approved retatrutide product exists in any form, and Lilly says retatrutide cannot be legally sold or marketed for human use. Capsules, drops or supplements advertised under GLP-3-style names are therefore not an approved Lilly medicine. In Lilly's trials, retatrutide was given as a once-weekly subcutaneous dose.
