Short answer

The Wegovy label (revised 6/2026, as of Oct 21, 2026) says inject under the skin of the abdomen, thigh, or upper arm, rotating sites with each dose. Exposure is similar at all three. All four device instructions add: stay 2 inches from the belly button. Example: each weekly dose goes in a different spot from the one before.

Wegovy injection sites in the label

Wegovy (semaglutide) injection is an FDA-approved, once-weekly medicine given subcutaneously, meaning into the fatty layer under the skin. The prescribing information names three body areas and one rule: rotate the site with each dose (Novo Nordisk, Jun 18, 2026). This page sets out what the label, the Medication Guide and the four Instructions for Use (IFUs) say. It does not teach technique; for that, use the IFU in your carton and ask your prescriber or pharmacist.

Wegovy injection sites per the label (section 2.1) and the Instructions for Use (Novo Nordisk, Jun 18, 2026)
SiteLabel wordingWhat the IFUs add
Abdomen (stomach area)“abdomen”All four IFUs: 2 inches from the belly button (syringe: “at least”; FlexTouch adds 5 cm); pen IFU says “lower stomach”
Thigh“thigh”Pen IFU: “upper leg (front of the thighs)”
Upper arm“upper arm”Syringe IFU only: back of the upper arm, with help from someone else
Any site“Rotate injection sites with each dose”Same body area is allowed, but not the same spot

The label’s own sentence is short: “Inject WEGOVY subcutaneously in the abdomen, thigh, or upper arm” (Novo Nordisk, Jun 18, 2026). The Medication Guide adds the route rule: do not inject Wegovy into a muscle or a vein (Novo Nordisk, Jun 18, 2026). The semaglutide hub collects the other label facts for Wegovy and Ozempic.

Does the site change how much drug you absorb?

The label answers this directly. Its pharmacokinetics section says that “similar exposure was achieved” with injections in the abdomen, thigh or upper arm (Novo Nordisk, Jun 18, 2026). Exposure means how much drug reaches the bloodstream over time. Section 2.1 goes further: the time of day and the injection site “can be changed without the need for a dosage modification” (Novo Nordisk, Jun 18, 2026).

Wegovy absorption facts from the label (section 12.3) (Novo Nordisk, Jun 18, 2026)
MeasureLabel value
Exposure across abdomen, thigh, upper armSimilar
Absolute bioavailability after subcutaneous injection89%
Time to maximum concentration1 to 3 days after the dose
Time in circulation after the last 2.4 mg or 7.2 mg doseAbout 5 to 7 weeks

So the label does not rank one site above another. The pen IFU says your healthcare provider can help you choose the injection site that is best for you (Novo Nordisk, Jun 18, 2026).

Rotating sites and skin to avoid

Rotation appears in every Wegovy document. The Medication Guide says not to use the same site for each injection (Novo Nordisk, Jun 18, 2026). The pen IFU adds that you may inject in the same body area each week, as long as it is not the same spot. The FlexTouch IFU says not the same spot used for the last injection, and the syringe IFU says to avoid the exact same spot as last time (Novo Nordisk, Jun 18, 2026). So each weekly dose goes in a different spot from the one before.

The single-dose pen and Wegovy HD IFUs give these site rules (Novo Nordisk, Jun 18, 2026):

  • Do not inject where the skin is tender, bruised, red or hard.
  • Avoid injecting into scars or stretch marks.
  • Clean the site with an alcohol swab or soap and water, do not touch it afterward, and let the skin dry first.
  • If blood appears, press the site lightly with a gauze pad or cotton ball. The FlexTouch and syringe IFUs add: do not rub.

The pen troubleshooting box has one site-specific tip. If you have problems injecting, change to a firmer site, such as the upper leg or upper arm, or consider standing up when injecting into the lower stomach (Novo Nordisk, Jun 18, 2026). Only the syringe IFU tells you to pinch a fold of skin (Novo Nordisk, Jun 18, 2026).

What each Wegovy presentation’s instructions say

Each Wegovy injection device has its own IFU, and the site wording differs slightly (Novo Nordisk, Jun 18, 2026).

Injection-site wording by Wegovy presentation (label section 3 and the Instructions for Use) (Novo Nordisk, Jun 18, 2026)

Wegovy HD, approved on March 19, 2026, is the 7.2 mg dose (FDA, Mar 19, 2026). Its IFU repeats the single-dose pen’s site wording (Novo Nordisk, Jun 18, 2026). Other device facts from the IFUs that bear on the injection itself (Novo Nordisk, Jun 18, 2026):

  • Single-dose pens (including HD): the needle is hidden, and the dose starts when the needle cover is pressed firmly against the skin. Keep pressing until the yellow bar stops (2 clicks). An injection cannot be stopped and restarted.
  • Prefilled syringes: the IFU says to insert the needle into pinched skin at a 45-degree angle, “to inject under the skin (subcutaneous) and not the muscle.”
  • FlexTouch: NovoFine Plus 32G 4 mm needles come in the carton; other compatible needles up to 8 mm can be used. Use a new needle for each injection, check the flow before the first dose of each new pen, and keep the dose button pressed while counting slowly to 6.

The label says patients should be trained on their specific presentation, and retrained if it changes. FlexTouch is not recommended for self-administration by people who are visually impaired (Novo Nordisk, Jun 18, 2026).

Injection day, time of day and meals

Section 2.1 of the label is the timing rule: give Wegovy injection once weekly, on the same day each week, at any time of day, with or without meals (Novo Nordisk, Jun 18, 2026). The Medication Guide adds that you may change the day of the week as long as your last dose was given 2 or more days before (Novo Nordisk, Jun 18, 2026).

Wegovy injection timing rules (label sections 2.1 and 2.4, Medication Guide) (Novo Nordisk, Jun 18, 2026)
SituationWhat the label says
FrequencyOnce weekly, same day each week
Time of dayAny time; can be changed without a dose change
MealsWith or without meals
Changing the weekly dayAllowed if the last dose was 2 or more days before
Missed dose, next dose more than 2 days awayGive as soon as possible
Missed dose, next dose less than 2 days awaySkip it; resume on the regular day

If 2 or more consecutive doses are missed, the label says to restart escalation at a lower dose (Novo Nordisk, Jun 18, 2026). That is a prescriber decision. The missed-dose guide compares this rule with other GLP-1 labels, and the semaglutide titration tool lays out the 4-week dose steps.

Injection-site reactions in the trials

In the adult weight-reduction trials, 1.4% of Wegovy-treated patients and 1% of placebo patients had injection-site reactions, including itching (pruritus), redness (erythema), inflammation, hardening (induration) and irritation (Novo Nordisk, Jun 18, 2026). If a site reaction worries you, talk to your prescriber or pharmacist.

Storage and in-use limits by presentation

Storage decides whether a dose is still usable on injection day, and the limits differ by device (Novo Nordisk, Jun 18, 2026).

Wegovy storage and discard rules (label section 16 and Medication Guide) (Novo Nordisk, Jun 18, 2026)
Presentation and stateRefrigeratedOut of the refrigerator
Single-dose pen, HD pen or syringe, unused2 °C to 8 °C (36 °F to 46 °F)If needed, before cap removal: 8 °C to 30 °C (46 °F to 86 °F) for up to 28 days, in the carton
Single-dose pen, HD pen or syringe, discardAfter use, if frozen, or if exposed to lightAbove 30 °C (86 °F), or out for 28 days or longer
FlexTouch pen, before first use2 °C to 8 °C (36 °F to 46 °F)Not stated
FlexTouch pen, after first useAllowed, for up to 56 days15 °C to 30 °C (59 °F to 86 °F) for up to 56 days

One wording gap: section 16 and the Medication Guide give 15 °C to 30 °C (59 °F to 86 °F) for an in-use FlexTouch pen, while the FlexTouch IFU says 20 °C to 25 °C (68 °F to 77 °F) (Novo Nordisk, Jun 18, 2026). Both give 56 days. Ask your pharmacist which range to follow.

Rules that apply to every injectable presentation (Novo Nordisk, Jun 18, 2026):

  • Do not freeze Wegovy, and do not use it if it has been frozen. Do not store it directly beside the refrigerator cooling element.
  • Protect it from light. Single-dose pens and syringes stay in the original carton until use; the FlexTouch pen keeps its cap on.
  • Store the FlexTouch pen without a needle attached, and do not leave it in a car or anywhere it can get too hot or too cold.

The semaglutide storage tool counts the 28-day and 56-day windows from a date you enter.

After the injection: disposal

Each single-dose pen and syringe is for one use. The IFUs say to put the used pen or syringe in an FDA-cleared sharps disposal container right away and not to throw it in household trash (Novo Nordisk, Jun 18, 2026). For FlexTouch, unscrew and discard the needle after every injection, and put the pen cap back on. After all four doses there may still be medicine left in the pen; the IFU says to throw the pen away anyway, and never to use a syringe to draw medicine out of it (Novo Nordisk, Jun 18, 2026).

Without one, the IFUs allow a heavy-duty plastic household container with a tight-fitting, puncture-resistant lid that is stable, leak-resistant and labeled as hazardous waste (Novo Nordisk, Jun 18, 2026). Do not recycle it. The IFUs point to the FDA sharps disposal page for state rules. Never share a Wegovy pen, even if the needle is changed; the label warns this risks spreading blood-borne infections (Novo Nordisk, Jun 18, 2026).

Wegovy tablets have no injection site

Wegovy also comes as tablets under the same label, and none of the site rules apply. The label says to take one tablet by mouth once daily on an empty stomach in the morning, with up to 4 ounces of water, then wait at least 30 minutes before eating or drinking (Novo Nordisk, Jun 18, 2026). Tablets are stored at 20 °C to 25 °C (68 °F to 77 °F). Per section 2.5, 25 mg tablets start one week after the last 2.4 mg injection (Novo Nordisk, Jun 18, 2026). For how the Wegovy pill compares with another oral option, see Foundayo vs the Wegovy pill.

Ozempic uses the same three sites

Ozempic, the same drug, uses the same site sentence (abdomen, thigh or upper arm) and the same 56-day in-use window for its multi-dose pens. Its rotation wording differs: use a different injection site each week when injecting in the same body region (Novo Nordisk, Jun 1, 2026). See Ozempic vs Wegovy for how the brands differ.

What the label does not say

We found no wording on these points in the label, the Medication Guide or the four IFUs (Novo Nordisk, Jun 18, 2026):

  • Which site works best. The label reports similar exposure and does not rank the sites.
  • A set rotation pattern, such as a clock or quadrant map. It says only to change the spot each time.
  • A distance rule for the thigh or arm. The 2-inch rule applies only to the belly button.
  • Warming a pen before use, icing the site, or massaging it afterward. The syringe IFU only forbids heating the syringe with hot water or a microwave.
  • Lipodystrophy. The Wegovy documents do not name it as a reason to rotate.
  • Anything about compounded semaglutide. Compounded products are not FDA approved and are not interchangeable with Wegovy.

Where to get technique help

This page reports what the documents say about sites; it does not replace the training the label calls for (Novo Nordisk, Jun 18, 2026). Read the IFU in your carton each time you start a new presentation, and ask your prescriber or pharmacist to walk you through it.

For dose steps, see the Wegovy dosing schedule. For the same questions about tirzepatide, including its 2-inch KwikPen rule, its “another person” rule for the arm and its vial lipodystrophy note, see Zepbound injection sites.

Frequently asked questions

Where do you inject Wegovy?

The Wegovy prescribing information says to inject under the skin of the abdomen, thigh, or upper arm, and to rotate injection sites with each dose. The pen Instructions for Use describe the sites as the front of the thighs, the lower stomach kept 2 inches away from the belly button, and the upper arm. Ask your prescriber or pharmacist to show you the technique for your presentation.

Is it better to inject Wegovy in the stomach or thigh?

The label does not rank the sites. Its pharmacology section says similar exposure was achieved with doses in the abdomen, thigh or upper arm, and section 2.1 says the injection site can be changed without a dose change. The pen instructions say your healthcare provider can help you choose the site that is best for you.

Do you have to rotate Wegovy injection sites?

Yes. The label says to rotate injection sites with each dose, and the Medication Guide says not to use the same site for each injection. The pen instructions say you may use the same body area each week, as long as it is not the same spot each time.

Can you inject Wegovy in the arm?

Yes. The label names the upper arm as one of three sites. The single-dose pen, Wegovy HD pen and FlexTouch instructions list the upper arm without requiring a second person. The prefilled syringe instructions are stricter: back of the upper arm only with help from someone else. Follow the instructions for the device you were given.

What time of day should I inject Wegovy?

The label does not set a time. It says to give Wegovy injection once weekly, on the same day each week, at any time of day, with or without meals, and that the time of day can be changed without a dose change. The Medication Guide says you can change the day of the week if your last dose was 2 or more days before.

How long can Wegovy be out of the fridge?

Per the label, a single-dose pen or syringe can be kept at 8 °C to 30 °C (46 °F to 86 °F) for up to 28 days, before the cap is removed, in the original carton. A FlexTouch pen can be stored for 56 days after first use at room temperature or in the refrigerator. Throw either away after those limits or if it was frozen.
